Introduction
Country music star and ‘American Idol’ winner Scotty McCreery is mourning the loss of both his grandmothers, who passed away on the same day. In an emotional Instagram post, the 31-year-old singer shared the heartbreaking news that his grandmothers, Janet Hunter Cook and Pakita McCreary, died on July 9, 2025.
“My heart is absolutely broken,” McCreery wrote in the post, which featured a touching photo from his 2018 wedding where he’s surrounded by both grandmothers and his wife, Gabi Dugal.
McCreery’s mother, Judy McCreery, later shared details on Facebook. She confirmed that Janet, McCreery’s maternal grandmother, was 85 years old and passed away from complications of the flu and norovirus. Pakita, his paternal grandmother, was 93 and died from declining health. Both women passed away just hours apart, leaving McCreery and his family in shock.
Remembering Janet and Pakita
McCreery’s post was filled with cherished memories of both women, showcasing their unique and vibrant spirits. He fondly recalled spending summers on his Grandma Janet’s farm in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where he learned the simple pleasures of country life and the values of hard work. Her influence is a recurring theme in his music, particularly in songs that celebrate his Southern roots and family.
He also paid tribute to his Grandma Pakita, who brought a rich cultural heritage into his life. Born in Puerto Rico, she was a dynamic and fun-loving woman. He shared memories of traveling to Puerto Rico with her and her unforgettable appearance on “Celebrity Family Feud,” where she charmed host Steve Harvey and the audience.
“Both of them truly taught me what love is all about,” he wrote, reflecting on the profound impact they had on his life and character.
A Wave of Support
The country music community and fellow “American Idol” alumni quickly rallied around McCreery. Lauren Alaina, who was the runner-up in McCreery’s season, commented, “Sending so much love and prayer your way,” while Haley Reinhart and James Durbin also offered their condolences.
This double loss comes a decade after the death of his grandfather, William “Bill” McCreary, who was the inspiration behind his hit song “Five More Minutes.”
Despite his grief, McCreery remains dedicated to his work and his family. He is continuing his tour and is preparing for the release of his new EP, “Scotty and Friends,” on July 18. He and his wife, Gabi, are also expecting their second child this fall.
As he navigates this difficult time, McCreery is focusing on the happy memories and the lessons of love that his grandmothers instilled in him. He closed his post with a request for prayers, a testament to the strength he draws from his faith. The post is a powerful reminder of the deep family bonds that have always been at the heart of his music and his career.
