Bette Midler Reacts to Diane Keaton's Death

Hollywood Says Goodbye to Diane Keaton in an Emotional Private Farewell

The worlds of film and art came together this weekend to bid farewell to one of Hollywood’s most beloved icons — Diane Keaton.

At a private funeral in Los Angeles, family, close friends, and industry greats gathered to celebrate the Academy Award winner whose warmth, wit, and originality shaped generations of storytelling. Among the heartfelt tributes, one of the most powerful came from her longtime friend and First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler, whose emotional eulogy moved the room to tears.

“She was hilarious, brilliant, and completely herself,” Midler said. “Diane never tried to be anyone else. She lived out loud — with curiosity, grace, and a wicked sense of humor that could light up the darkest day.”

The small chapel was filled with white roses — Keaton’s favorite — and black-and-white photographs she had taken herself, reflecting her lifelong passion for art and architecture. A slideshow played behind Midler, showing Keaton’s unforgettable moments from Annie Hall, Something’s Gotta Give, and The Godfather.

Fellow stars including Goldie Hawn, Steve Martin, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Mandy Moore attended the service. At one poignant moment, Hawn joined Midler on stage and whispered, “We’re not ready to let you go, Di,” as the room fell silent.

The ceremony closed with Midler performing an a cappella version of “Wind Beneath My Wings.” As her final note faded, images of Keaton’s laughter filled the screen — a tribute to a woman who lived fully, fiercely, and unapologetically.

Outside, fans left flowers and handwritten notes quoting her Annie Hall line: “La-di-da, la-di-da.”

As one guest said softly, “Diane Keaton didn’t just play roles — she lived them. And she made all of us braver for it.”
