Hello music enthusiasts, and welcome back! Today, we are diving into the life and legacy of country music icon Merle Haggard by meeting the children who carry on his name and musical spirit.
Dana Haggard
Born in 1958 to Merle and his first wife, Leona Hobbs, Dana was a multi-talented artist and singer. She spent her early career touring with her brother in Marty and Dana and the Driftwood Band, and later served as a backup vocalist for Merle’s famous backing band, The Strangers. Beyond music, Dana was an accomplished painter inspired by California’s landscapes. Sadly, she passed away in 2018 at age 61.
Marty Haggard
Merle’s firstborn son, Marty, followed directly in his father’s footsteps. After touring with Dana and joining Merle’s road band as a rhythm guitarist and harmony vocalist, Marty launched a solo career with MTM Records in 1985. His single “Trains Make Me Lonesome” reached #57 on the country charts and earned him an ACM nomination for Top New Male Vocalist.
Kelly Haggard
The third child from Merle’s first marriage, Kelly has chosen a path away from the spotlight. Though she frequently supports her family at gatherings, Kelly has dedicated her life to philanthropy and community service, making a quiet yet meaningful impact.
Noel Haggard
Born in 1963 to Merle and country artist Bonnie Owens, Noel grew up immersed in classic country music. He has crafted his own authentic sound, blending traditional country elements with a unique personal style. Today, he frequently tours alongside his younger brother, Ben.
Janessa Haggard
As Merle’s eldest child with his fifth wife, Teresa Ann Lane, Janessa opted for culinary school over a music career. However, she managed much of her father’s business affairs. In 2016, she and her husband collaborated with the Colorado Weed Co. to release cannabis strains dedicated to her late father.
Ben Haggard
Born in 1992 to Merle and Teresa Ann Lane, Ben became the lead guitarist for The Strangers at just 15 years old. Merle famously advised him to keep playing his songs and using his guitar as long as possible. Today, Ben continues to tour, perform, and honor his father’s songs worldwide.
Scott Haggard
Born in 1968 outside of Merle’s five marriages, Scott grew up in Alabama and did not meet his father until he was 37. Despite working as a truck driver during tough economic times, Scott never gave up on his passion for music. In 2006, he launched a successful country music career, later winning the Horizon Award from the Mobile Alabama Country Music Association in 2008.
Through music, art, business, and philanthropy, the Haggard children continue to keep Merle’s remarkable legacy alive.
