Originally penned and recorded by siblings Inez and Charlie Foxx in 1963, the track drew inspiration from the traditional lullaby “Hush, Little Baby.” The Foxx duo’s rendition achieved significant success, reaching No. 2 on the U.S. Top Black Singles/Rhythm & Blues chart and No. 7 on the U.S. popular music singles chart in the summer of 1963.
Over the years, “Mockingbird” has seen various covers by renowned artists, including Aretha Franklin, and Carly Simon and James Taylor, who offered their unique interpretations of this classic tune.
In 2004, country music star Toby Keith introduced a new dimension to “Mockingbird” by collaborating with his daughter, Krystal Keith. At 19, Krystal joined her father on stage at the 38th Annual Country Music Association Awards for a memorable performance of the song. Their rendition was characterized by a dynamic exchange of lyrics, showcasing their vocal strengths and familial bond. This live performance was later included in Toby Keith’s “Greatest Hits 2” album, with their version of “Mockingbird” reaching No. 27 on the Hot Country Songs chart that same year.
Reflecting on the experience, Krystal Keith recalled feeling remarkably confident despite the high stakes of performing live on such a prominent stage. She noted, “I remember being incredibly secure in it. I should have been completely terrified, but I was 18 or 19, and I really just didn’t have any reservations about it.”
Following this pivotal moment, Krystal honored her father’s wishes to prioritize education, graduating from the University of Oklahoma before fully embarking on her music career. In 2013, she released her debut album, “Whiskey & Lace,” further establishing her presence in the country music scene.
