The Untold Story of Elvis Presley’s Final Wish—and the Quiet Ceremony That Moved His Family to Tears

When Elvis Presley died unexpectedly at the age of 42 on August 16, 1977, the world came to a standstill. Fans mourned, the music industry reeled, and his family was left shattered. But behind the public grief was a private heartbreak—a secret burial request from Elvis that very few people ever knew about. And decades later, that wish would become one of the most emotional aspects of the Presley legacy.

Nancy Rooks, who worked as a housekeeper at Graceland for a decade, revealed in her book Inside Graceland that Elvis had always been vocal about his desire not to be buried underground. “He told me more than once,” she said, “that he wanted an above-ground crypt.” Respecting this, Vernon Presley, Elvis’s father, initially interred his son in a mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, just below the resting place of Elvis’s mother, Gladys.

However, less than two weeks after the funeral, rumors of a plot to steal Elvis’s body forced the family to act quickly. Vernon made the heartbreaking decision to relocate both Elvis and Gladys to Graceland’s Meditation Garden—a sacred spot the singer loved. Although Elvis had wished not to be buried in the ground, safety and legacy took precedence. Vernon arranged for two additional graves nearby, knowing that one day he and his mother Minnie Mae would join Elvis there.

On October 2, 1977, under heavy secrecy, a small and deeply emotional second funeral was held at Graceland. Only close family and a handful of friends attended. It wasn’t lavish—but it was peaceful, intimate, and filled with love.

Since then, the Meditation Garden has become the final resting place for several generations of the Presley family—including Elvis’s grandson Benjamin Keough in 2020, and Lisa Marie Presley in 2023. Priscilla Presley, now 80, has been granted the right to be buried there as well, fulfilling what has quietly become a family tradition: to bring everyone “home” to Graceland, whether in life or in death.
