Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan Launch New ‘Gritty’ Singing Competition, ‘The Road’
Country superstar Blake Shelton and ‘Yellowstone’ creator Taylor Sheridan are tearing up the reality TV rulebook with their new CBS show, which promises to throw artists into the raw, unfiltered world of touring.
After serving as a coach on The Voice for 23 seasons, country music superstar Blake Shelton is no stranger to the limelight. Now, he’s taking on a new position as the architect behind a pioneering reality competition show called “The Road,” scheduled to debut on CBS on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
With the help of Yellowstone’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, Shelton is introducing a new, gritty approach to the singing competition genre. The most recent teasers are buzzing with fan excitement, as The Road promises to throw prospective artists into the raw, unfiltered world of touring, striving to win over crowds and obtain a life-changing prize.
A Singing Competition Unlike Any Other
The concept that Shelton and Sheridan have developed does away with the glistening floors and stage dramas featured on shows like American Idol and The Voice. Instead, the series follows 12 aspiring musicians as they embark on a tour as opening acts for country music legend Keith Urban.
While on tour, they face the problems they would face in the real world. The competition will take place at seven moderate-sized venues across the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, culminating in a performance at the illustrious Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. It’s possible that not all of the contenders will be country musicians.
Each performance is a high-stakes opportunity to win over local audiences who, along with Urban, Gretchen Wilson, and other yet-to-be-disclosed country singers, will decide which artists will move on to the next location.
Shelton, who is also an executive producer on the show, highlighted the show’s distinctive approach in a trailer uploaded to Instagram on August 13, 2025. He made a veiled reference to the demanding timetable and intense emotional pressure by saying, “Touring is difficult to get right.”
High Stakes and Big Prizes
The stakes are significantly higher than they were during Shelton’s tenure on The Voice. The winner of the program will receive a cash prize of $250,000 and a coveted record deal, as stated in a sneak peek released on the show’s Instagram account. This is an opportunity that has the potential to propel an undiscovered recording artist into the spotlight.
This focus on realism is what sets The Road apart. It provides viewers with a backstage pass to the inner workings of the music industry—from the strain of performing night after night to the experience of living on a tour bus.
The Dream Team: Urban, Wilson, and Shelton
Keith Urban is the main attraction, bringing his star power and industry expertise. Shelton, meanwhile, is a driving force behind the scenes and will appear on camera to mentor participants.
Urban, a four-time Grammy Award winner, expressed his excitement by saying, “I spent a lot of years playing in some real CD pubs… but it’s where I learned so much about what I do. I think it’s a fantastic idea to immerse artists in real-world settings.”
Joining Urban on the road is Gretchen Wilson, well known for her no-nonsense attitude and hits like “Redneck Woman,” who has joined the show in the role of tour manager.
“Stepping into the role of tour manager for The Road has allowed me to take everything I’ve learned over all of my years of touring and pour it right back into these emerging musicians,” Wilson said in a press statement. Her participation adds a degree of authenticity, as she will assist entrants in navigating challenges like senseless decisions and crowd engagement—abilities that cannot be taught in a studio setting.
The Journey and Legacy
The tour was shot during March and April 2025 at various locations, including Tana Hills in Fort Worth, Texas; The Factory in Dallas, Texas; Oklahoma Ranch in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Kane’s Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Memphis, Tennessee, before culminating at the historic Ryman Auditorium.
Shelton’s personal experiences as a touring artist served as the inspiration for his idea. “I know a thing or two about singing competitions and what it’s like to chase a music dream and live life on tour,” he stated.
Sheridan, well known for his gritty storytelling in Yellowstone, promises a documentary-style approach that will capture the raw emotion and drama of the participants’ journey.
“Country music is currently undergoing a revolution,” Sheridan said, referring to the show as a platform for the next leaders of that revolution. “This is the point where the road meets the rubber. To win over the crowd, you should get in the van and travel to the next town.”
This philosophy aligns with Shelton’s own career, which began with modest appearances before his breakthrough success. His partnership with Sheridan and Urban results in a dream team capable of identifying the next big name in music.
