Sneak Peek At Our Homestead Day |Join Rory Feek & Melissa

We recently had the distinct pleasure of welcoming the wonderful Melissa K. Norris of Fifth Generation Homesteading to Hardison Mill a day before our big Homestead Day event. For those who might remember, Melissa graced our farm last year during the HOA conference, and it was truly a highlight for us.

Rory fondly recalls first meeting Melissa by chance. He was in the kitchen and spotted her through the window, passionately demonstrating gardening techniques. Drawn by her enthusiasm, he naturally joined the group gathered around her. As we prepared for the conference, Melissa generously offered to let folks get their hands dirty in a section of her garden – and even lent a hand with our own planting!

That initial visit left a lasting impression. Rory was struck by Melissa’s genuine passion for homesteading and how readily she shared her knowledge. Fast forward to this year, and we were thrilled when Melissa accepted our invitation to arrive a day early. We were eager to show her more of what we’re building here at Hardison Mill – a place not just for learning, but for community and connection, a place that can hopefully be a blessing to others in countless ways.

The extra day with Melissa was invaluable. We spent hours wandering through the garden, showing her our layout, sharing our vision for the future, and outlining our plans for expansion to better nourish our family and the wider community. Melissa walked through it all with a keen eye, offering insightful suggestions and fresh perspectives on things we could try. It was truly a collaborative and inspiring day!

But beyond the practical homesteading advice, one of the most heartwarming aspects was watching Melissa connect with our daughter Hopie and our niece Megan. She didn’t just share her expertise as a seasoned homesteader; she also offered encouragement and wisdom as a woman. It was a beautiful thing to witness.

Now, we’re excited to share that the tables will soon turn! Rory will be heading out to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to be a part of Melissa’s Modern Homesteading Conference on June 30th and July 1st. He’s looking forward to speaking and spending a couple of days connecting with her community. While it won’t be on her exact farm, he’s eager to participate in her event.

These connections – with fellow homesteaders like Melissa – are what make this journey so rich and rewarding. We’re grateful for the opportunity to learn from others and to share what we’re building here at Hardison Mill. Stay tuned for more updates from the farm!
