Reba McEntire Honors Kris Kristofferson with a Heartfelt Tribute at the 60th ACM Awards
At the 60th ACM Awards, one of the evening’s most touching moments came when host Reba McEntire took the stage to honor her dear friend, Kris Kristofferson, who passed away on September 28, 2024, at the age of 88.
Following Kristofferson’s death, McEntire shared a heartfelt photo of the two together onstage a few years prior. She posted a tribute on Instagram, writing:
“What a gentleman, kind soul, and a lover of words. I am so glad I got to meet him and be around him. One of my favorite people. Rest in peace, Kris.”
Kristofferson, a celebrated solo artist, actor, member of the Highwaymen, and acclaimed songwriter, left an indelible mark on country music. He penned timeless classics like “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “Me and Bobby McGee,” which was recorded by numerous artists, but it was Janis Joplin’s version that became the most iconic. Kristofferson’s own rendition of “Me and Bobby McGee” also remained a staple in his live performances, both solo and with the Highwaymen.
During the 2016 tribute show in Nashville, McEntire sang “Me and Bobby McGee” in honor of Kristofferson, and he even joined her onstage for a touching duet.
As Reba prepared her tribute to Kris Kristofferson at the ACM Awards, it was clear that “Me and Bobby McGee” would be the perfect song. She performed the song a cappella, adding even more emotion to the moment by encouraging the crowd to sing along. After finishing part of the song, McEntire, visibly teary-eyed, took a moment to remember not only Kristofferson but also other beloved figures in the country music community who had passed away that year.
“Tonight, we remember Kris and all those in our extended country music family who passed on this past year. And that list includes my buddy Joe Bonsall from the Oak Ridge Boys, the wonderful singer-songwriter Melba Montgomery, the highly respected musical producer Ben Vaughn, and Dolly Parton’s husband and love of 60 years, Carl Dean. They all brought music to our lives and live on forever in our hearts.”
Reba’s emotional tribute was a reminder of the deep connections that the country music family shares and the lasting impact of those we’ve lost. The tribute to Kris Kristofferson, accompanied by “Me and Bobby McGee,” left an unforgettable imprint on the evening.
