THE LAST SONG BEFORE HEAVEN CALLED HIM HOME — In his final moments on earth, Jimmy Swaggart lifted his voice one last time, singing a hymn that echoed like a divine farewell, as if angels were already harmonizing with him.

Last night at the Grand Ole Opry, something gentle happened. Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson sang “I Will Always Love You,” and Dolly Parton stayed seated. No spotlight. Just her hands folded, eyes shining, listening to her own words come back to her. She didn’t expect it. You could tell. When she spoke later, her voice was soft, almost surprised by her own emotion. Then the lights dimmed. A cake appeared. Eighty candles flickered. For a second, the Opry wasn’t a stage anymore. It was a quiet room, waiting. Dolly smiled, closed her eyes, and blew them out. Not as a legend. Just as a woman whose songs have lived inside us for decades.

Last night, Keith Urban didn’t sit like a man who has sold out arenas for decades. At 58, he sat still. Quiet. Hands folded. Like someone afraid to breathe too loudly and break the moment. His wife walked into the light and sang his song. No theatrics. No reinvention. Just a voice that knew every word before it was ever written. The room expected confidence. What they got was tenderness. When the first line landed, Keith looked down — not to hide emotion, but to steady it. This wasn’t about fame. Or legacy. Or headlines. This was a woman who had lived inside those songs. And a man hearing them returned… changed. For a few minutes, nothing else existed. Not awards. Not history. Just a husband listening — and a wife giving something back that had carried them both. One fan wrote later: “That wasn’t a performance. That was a marriage remembering itself.”

In 1986, Lima, Peru became the stage for one of the most powerful moments in Jimmy Swaggart’s ministry. At a time when the nation was marked by political unrest and hardship, Swaggart’s crusade drew tens of thousands — believers, skeptics, and seekers alike — who flooded the open-air grounds and surrounding streets. Some traveled for days through mountains and villages just to be there.

At 86, Charley Pride stepped onto the CMA Awards stage for what would become his final performance — and sang the song that helped change country music forever. On November 11, 2020, he appeared at the CMA Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement honor. But then he gave the audience something even more memorable: he sang “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” the signature hit that turned a sharecropper’s son from Mississippi into the first Black superstar in the history of country music. He admitted he was nervous. His voice may not have carried the same strength it once did, but its warmth remained unmistakable. In every note, there was the quiet power of a man who had spent five decades breaking barriers with grace, dignity, and extraordinary talent. Just 31 days later, Charley Pride was gone. He died of COVID-19 at the age of 86. That night on the CMA stage became the last time he ever sang in public.
