From Stardom to Starting Over: The Unshakable Faith of Jimmy Fortune
For over a quarter of a century, music fans have cheered for Jimmy Fortune, but his path was not always lined with easy victories. For years, Fortune achieved massive success as a member of the legendary Statler Brothers. Sitting at the top of the country music industry, the group enjoyed a massive, loyal fan base. However, when the Statler Brothers retired, Fortune found himself in an unfamiliar position: he was out on his own, stepping into the role of the underdog.
Transitioning from playing sold-out arenas with a legendary group to pursuing a solo career required an immense reset. Starting over meant facing reality checks that would test anyone’s pride. In the early days of his solo career, Fortune encountered industry insiders who barely recognized his name. One radio DJ candidly admitted off-air that while he knew the Statler Brothers, he had no idea who Jimmy Fortune was. Rather than letting insult take root, Fortune embraced the humbling moment, realizing that everyone has to start somewhere.
This transition was fully realized when he accepted a solo performance at a county fair in upstate New York. Arriving in his trusty Suburban, Fortune found no lavish stage or professional dressing room awaiting him. Instead, the setup consisted of just two Peavey speakers and a single microphone placed directly on a dirt racetrack in front of the grandstands. To make matters worse, his designated dressing room was an uncleaned horse trailer. With only about a hundred people in the grandstands—competing against the roar of a five-thousand-person demolition derby nearby—Fortune realized his life had drastically changed. When asked why he was brought there, the fair organizer simply explained he was a fan who wanted to offer work. Fortune put his ego completely aside and played his heart out.
It was precisely this humility, resilience, and authenticity that made fans fall in love with him all over again. Throughout his solo journey, Fortune maintained a steadfast promise: to use his music to honor God and provide wholesome, family-friendly entertainment across generations. For Fortune, however, his greatest source of pride remains at home. Among all his accomplishments, his favorite titles are “Daddy” and “Papa,” cherishing his growing family of 14 grandchildren.
Today, Fortune continues to share his journey through his autobiography, Story of an American Dreamer, alongside a raw, live CD and DVD recorded at Ricky Skaggs’ studio. Rejecting modern digital fixes and artificial enhancements, Fortune chose to record the project live without overdubs, offering fans a completely real and unfiltered look at his life and music. Jimmy Fortune’s story stands as a testament to faith, hard work, and the enduring spirit of a true American dreamer.
