Introduction
Just a day prior, on Thursday, June 19th, Billy Strings performed at the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival in Michigan, a place he’s frequented since childhood. His father, fellow bluegrass musician Terry Barber, even joined him for a portion of the set. Notably, his mother was not present.
Following the Michigan show, Billy and his band traveled overnight to Lexington, Kentucky, for their next performance. He recalled finally getting to sleep around 5:40 AM. It was just a few hours later, still in a deep sleep, that his wife woke him with the devastating news: his beloved mother, Deborah, had passed away in her sleep.
Finding Solace and Continuing On
In the wake of this profound loss, Billy shared that he simply put on his shoes and walked, eventually finding comfort in a small country church where a compassionate woman offered him solace and prayer.
Despite the immense grief, Billy Strings made the courageous decision to proceed with the concert. He explained his choice to the audience, stating unequivocally that it was what his mother would have wanted. He spoke of her deep affection for his fans, emphasizing how the last few years had been some of her happiest, largely due to the connections she made with many in the crowd. He expressed his gratitude to the audience, acknowledging that they had become some of her dearest friends.
A Tribute Through Music
The performance that followed was a testament to Billy Strings’ strength and dedication, a truly courageous moment. As he noted, playing the show was a way to honor his mother’s wishes and her love for the music and the community.
Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Billy Strings, his family, friends, and all loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
