“And I Love Her” is a song recorded by the English rock band the Beatles, primarily written by Paul McCartney and credited to the Lennon–McCartney partnership. Featured as the fifth track on their third UK album, “A Hard Day’s Night,” the song was released on July 20, 1964, alongside “If I Fell” as a single by Capitol Records in the United States, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Beatles performed “And I Love Her” only once outside EMI Studios, on July 14, 1964, for the BBC’s Top Gear radio show. This performance was broadcast two days later. The song has been covered by various artists, including Esther Phillips, Kurt Cobain, and Cliff Richard.

Composition: The composition transitions between the key of E and its relative minor C#m and shifts to the key of F just before the solo. The final chord is a D major, employing a Picardy third resolution. McCartney considered “And I Love Her” as the “first ballad I impressed myself with,” while Lennon referred to it as McCartney’s “first ‘Yesterday’.” Lennon claimed his major contribution was the middle eight section, though McCartney attributed it to himself. McCartney credited George Harrison with creating the signature guitar riff, emphasizing its significant impact on the song.

McCartney explained the importance of the word “And” in the title, stating it came unexpectedly and added a unique element to the song. Cash Box described the song as an “extremely pretty, soft beat cha cha opus,” praising the Beatles for their “soft and tender fashion.”

Instrumental Version: An instrumental version of “And I Love Her,” orchestrated by George Martin, was released as a single on July 18, 1964, with “Ringo’s Theme (This Boy)” as the B-side. It did not chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 105, while “Ringo’s Theme (This Boy)” reached number 53 later that year. The song was included in Martin’s Parlophone album “Off the Beatle Track” and the EP “Music From A Hard Day’s Night” by the George Martin Orchestra, released on February 19, 1965. Additionally, it featured on the American “A Hard Day’s Night” soundtrack album.

Lyrics

I give her all my love
That’s all I do
And if you saw my love
You’d love her too
I love her

She gives me everything
And tenderly
The kiss my lover brings
She brings to me
And I love her

A love like ours
Could never die
As long as I
Have you near me

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her

Bright are the stars that shine
Dark is the sky
I know this love of mine
Will never die
And I love her
