Born on March 11, 1955, in Nelson County, Virginia, Jimmy Fortune’s path from a small-town singer to a country music icon is a testament to talent, timing, and dedication. Growing up in Lovingston, Virginia, Fortune’s life was steeped in rural simplicity, with music serving as a constant companion in local gatherings and church choirs. However, a chance encounter in 1982 forever changed the trajectory of his life.
Lew DeWitt, the original tenor of the legendary group the Statler Brothers, was battling Crohn’s disease and searching for a voice to sustain the group’s intricate harmonies. After hearing Fortune perform at a local ski resort, DeWitt invited him to audition. What was initially intended as a temporary replacement turned into a permanent role, launching Fortune into a 21-year journey with one of country music’s most revered ensembles.
Joining the Statler Brothers required not only vocal precision but also immense emotional resilience to step into DeWitt’s shoes. The pressures were intense, yet they sharpened Fortune’s artistry. Over the next two decades, he endured a relentless cycle of touring, recording in Nashville, and performing across the United States and Canada. Beyond his tenor vocals, Fortune proved to be a gifted songwriter. He penned some of the group’s biggest hits, including “Elizabeth,” “Too Much on My Heart,” “My Only Love,” and the top-10 country hit “More Than a Name on a Wall.” His work earned the group widespread acclaim, culminating in their induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

The accompanying DVD debuted at number one on the Billboard music video chart, highlighting his deep connection to gospel and country storytelling. In 2020, Fortune expanded his horizons by joining Bradley Walker, Ben Isaacs, and Mike Rogers to form the group Brothers of the Heart. Together, they released successful collaborative albums, including Brotherly Love and Will the Circle Be Unbroken (2023).
