Anita Wood talks about Elvis, Priscilla, and the funeral of Gladys Presley

Elvis Presley: Love, Loss, and the Eternal Bond with His Mother
In July 1957, a 19-year-old singer named Anita Wood met Elvis Presley. She would become his girlfriend for the next five years, navigating the chaotic rise of his global stardom and sharing a deeply personal space within his tight-knit family. Anita was the first girlfriend to spend a significant amount of time at the newly purchased Graceland, where she witnessed the extraordinary, protective bond between Elvis and his mother, Gladys. Gladys, who struggled with poor health and anxiety over Elvis’s safety, openly hoped the young couple would marry, often dreaming of seeing grandchildren walking down the driveway.

However, the family’s happiness was cut short in March 1958 when Elvis was drafted into the U.S. Army. Knowing little of military life, Elvis hated leaving his mother. The emotional stress proved too much for Gladys. When news broke that Elvis would be deployed to Germany, her health deteriorated rapidly. On August 14, 1958, 46-year-old Gladys passed away from a heart attack caused by hepatitis complications. Elvis was utterly inconsolable. Anita recalled the heartbreaking moment at Graceland when Elvis took her to see his mother in the coffin, gently patting her feet and calling her “precious.”

At the public funeral, surrounded by grieving fans, Elvis collapsed at the gravesite, crying out, “Everything I have is gone.”

“Oh God, everything I have is gone. Goodbye, darling. Goodbye. Goodbye.”

Six weeks later, a devastated Elvis was shipped to Germany. Although Anita wanted to visit, Colonel Parker blocked the trip to protect Elvis’s single image among female fans. While Elvis wrote letters pledging his love to Anita, he also dated other women. In September 1959, he met 14-year-old Priscilla Beaulieu. The secret came to light in 1961 when Anita discovered a letter from Priscilla detailing plans to visit the States. Following a heated confrontation, Anita made the painful decision to leave Elvis’s life.

Years later, Gladys’s resting place underwent significant changes. In 1964, Elvis replaced her generic tombstone with a custom-designed marble one, featuring a cross and a Star of David to honor her Jewish heritage. It was inscribed with the words “Sunshine of our home” and changed her recorded name to Gladys Love Presley. Following safety concerns in 1977, both Elvis and Gladys were moved to Graceland’s Meditation Garden, though her custom tombstone was initially left out by Vernon Presley. Finally, in 2018, on the 60th anniversary of her passing, the beautiful gravestone Elvis designed was exhumed from storage and permanently placed at Graceland, reuniting a son’s eternal tribute with his beloved mother.
