Muhammad Ali talks about Elvis in rare, surprising speech

THE ELVIS OF BOXING: How Muhammad Ali and the King of Rock and Roll Forged an Unbreakable Bond
Muhammad Ali is universally celebrated as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time, famous for his iconic phrase, “I’m the greatest.” Yet, there was one other man whom Ali freely bestowed with that exact title: the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Their legendary cross-cultural friendship represents a unique intersection of sports, music, and mutual admiration that lasted until Presley’s untimely passing in 1977.

A Teenage Inspiration
Long before he became a global boxing icon, a teenage Muhammad Ali watched Elvis’s explosive breakthrough in 1956. While his neighborhood peers were listening to Ray Charles and James Brown, Ali found himself captivated by Elvis. He admired the young singer’s charisma so intensely that he decided if he ever became famous, he would do it just like Elvis—entertaining the crowds, winning the people’s love, and capturing the hearts of admirers.

Beyond the stage presence, Elvis’s character deeply touched the young athlete. Ali was particularly moved when a young Elvis promised to buy his mother a car and a house once he made it big. Inspired by that vow, a 14-year-old Ali promised to do the same. True to his word, Ali bought his mother a pink Cadillac after his first professional fight and a home for his parents right after his second.

The Vegas Meeting and Iconic Exchanges
The two originals finally met face-to-face in Las Vegas in February 1973. Recognizing their shared flair for showmanship, Elvis presented Ali with a custom-designed, bejeweled white robe echoing the style of his famous stage jumpsuits. It featured the words “The People’s Choice”—a slight mix-up by the designer, who intended to write “The People’s Champ”—but Ali proudly wore it regardless. When legendary broadcaster Howard Cosell asked about the beautiful garment, Ali proudly declared, “Elvis gave it to me.” In return, Ali gave Elvis signed boxing gloves inscribed with the words: “Elvis, you are the greatest from Muhammad Ali. Peace 1973.”

A Lasting, Humble Friendship
Their bond extended beyond public publicity stunts. Elvis later visited Ali’s famous Deer Lake training camp about two years before his death. Ali frequently noted that despite Elvis’s unimaginable fame, he was the sweetest, most humble, and nicest man anyone could ever know.

In August 1985, eight years after Presley’s death and just a year after his own Parkinson’s diagnosis, Ali traveled to Memphis for Elvis Week. He spoke at the annual memorial service arranged by George Klein, winning over the crowd by professing his love for the song “Don’t Be Cruel” and paying his respects at Elvis’s grave in the Meditation Garden. Ali always harbored one lingering regret: declining a 1973 ride in Elvis’s gold-plated Cadillac. He often dreamed of Elvis driving him down Beale Street in a convertible, showing his hometown that the King of Boxing and the King of Rock were true friends. “I was the Elvis of boxing,” Ali famously stated, cementing a brotherhood built on pure respect.
