Living Legends: Brooks & Dunn On How 'Reboot II' Is A Continuation Of "Winging It From Day One" | GRAMMY.com

The Road to Country Royalty
Before their paths crossed in 1990, both men were struggling solo artists. Kix Brooks, a Louisiana native with a background in theater and a rugged work ethic forged on Alaskan pipelines, was finding modest success as a Nashville songwriter. Meanwhile, Texas-born Ronnie Dunn was honing his soulful, “gospel fire” vocals in the smoky bars of Tulsa. When Arista Nashville executive Tim DuBois paired them together, the chemistry was “lightning in a bottle”. Their 1991 debut, Brand New Man, went six times platinum, launching a career that would include 30 million album sales and 17 Vocal Duo of the Year awards.

Life on the Ranch: Painted Springs and Nashville Luxury
Despite their fame, both artists find sanctuary in the rolling pastures of Tennessee.

Kix Brooks’ Painted Springs Ranch: Spanning 550 acres in Williamson County, Kix’s estate is a blend of “country sophistication and Southern soul”. The ranch features a grand family home with stone fireplaces, a chef’s kitchen, and a master suite that feels like a resort. Outside, the property includes three barns and vast pastures for cattle and horses.

Ronnie Dunn’s Farmhouse: Just outside Nashville, Ronnie’s 11,000-square-foot antebellum-style mansion reflects his “refined yet unapologetically country” personality. The home is filled with Texas stonework, elk antler chandeliers, and vaulted hardwood ceilings. It serves as a creative haven where he writes and reflects amidst manicured hedges and shimmering pools.

Beyond the Music: Business and Philanthropy
The duo’s success extends into diverse ventures. Kix co-founded the award-winning Arrington Vineyards, while Ronnie manages his independent label, Little Will-E Records. However, their legacy is most defined by their generosity. Kix has raised over $11 million for music education through the “Keep the Music Playing” program. Ronnie frequently hosts “Rock the Barn” charity events on his farm to support cancer research and patient care.

At the heart of it all remains family. Kix has been married to his wife, Barbara, for over 44 years, while Ronnie and his wife, Janine, have shared a 34-year journey. For the Kings of Honky Tonk, the real glory isn’t found under the stage lights, but in the quiet moments on the ranch with the people they love.
