Riley Green Reveals the Surprising Reason Travis Tritt Once Turned Him Down for a Tour Spot
At first glance, many country music fans might assume that traditionalists like Travis Tritt and rising star Riley Green are far removed from the fast-paced world of social media. But even the most old-school artists, it seems, can’t escape the realities of the digital era.
And for Riley Green, that lesson came with a tough wake-up call.
During a recent appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, Green looked back on a pivotal — and humbling — moment early in his career, when he narrowly missed out on the chance to join Travis Tritt on tour. The reason had nothing to do with his talent, work ethic, or sound. It came down to one unexpected metric: social media followers.
A Missed Opportunity With Travis Tritt
Green recalled that he was still a newcomer at the time, slowly building a loyal fanbase through small venues and word-of-mouth buzz. The business side of the industry was still a mystery to him.
“I had a buddy who worked with Sam Hunt,” Green explained. “He called me and said, ‘Man, we got an offer to open for Travis Tritt. We can’t do it — I’m gonna put your name in the hat.’”
For a moment, it felt like a dream opportunity. But that hope didn’t last long.
“He called me back and said, ‘Man… you don’t have enough followers on Facebook,’” Green said, laughing at the memory. “I was like, ‘I don’t even really have Facebook. What does that have to do with anything?’”
Only later did he realize that social media — even for country traditionalists — had become a crucial tool for touring, marketing, and fan engagement.
“That’s when it clicked that social media was part of the job. So I figured it out.”

An Accidental Rise to Stardom
Green emphasized that his mainstream success was “almost accidental.” He loved writing and performing, but had little understanding of how the industry worked until labels began taking interest.
Once he signed his record deal in 2018, everything changed. His fanbase exploded, boosted by electric live shows and a string of chart-friendly singles.
His career reached new highs in 2024 with the breakout duet “You Look Like You Love Me” featuring Ella Langley — a song that transformed him from rising act to full-blown star. Around the same time, fans crowned him one of country music’s newest heartthrobs, thanks in part to his now-famous mustache.
On Tour and On a Roll
Today, Green is far from the unknown artist who once lost a gig over Facebook numbers. He’s currently headlining his Damn Country Music Tour, which continues through November, drawing massive crowds nationwide.
And while he may have missed out on that early tour with Travis Tritt, the lesson he learned turned out to be priceless — proof that even country’s most traditional voices must keep pace with a changing world.
