Travis Tritt Reflects on the Iconic Jacket He Wore During His Super Bowl Halftime Performance — and the Unexpected Story Behind It
Country music legend Travis Tritt is opening up about one unforgettable piece of memorabilia from his career: the famous light-blue fringed leather jacket he wore during the 1994 Super Bowl Halftime Show.
The performance, part of Super Bowl XXVIII, featured some of the biggest names in ’90s country music, including Tanya Tucker, Clint Black, and The Judds. Fans still remember Tritt stepping on stage with his long hair, a confident swagger, and the unmistakable jacket that instantly became part of country-music fashion history.
During a recent appearance on a country music podcast hosted by Dillon Weldon, Tritt shared the full backstory behind the jacket — including why he almost didn’t buy it.
According to Tritt, the jacket wasn’t something he planned to wear or even had in mind when preparing for the performance. He spotted it in a boutique while browsing with a stylist.
“I walked past it twice before I finally stopped and said, ‘Hold up—what is that?’” Tritt recalled with a laugh. “It looked wild, even for me.”
The jacket wasn’t cheap, and at first, Tritt hesitated. It was flashy, bold, and unlike anything he had worn before.
Then came the push he needed.
A salesperson mentioned that another artist — none other than Wynonna Judd — had her eye on the same jacket.
“I looked at him and said, ‘Nope, ring it up. I’m taking it with me,’” Tritt said. “There was no way I was letting Wynonna get that thing first.”
On the podcast, Tritt joked that he didn’t just buy the jacket — he claimed a piece of country-music fashion history. Fans still talk about it decades later, and Tritt says he kept it stored safely all these years.
“People come up all the time and ask where they can get one,” he shared. “I tell them, ‘Good luck — they didn’t make many, and the one I’ve got isn’t going anywhere.’”
Fans have been flooding the comment section of the podcast clips, sharing memories and admiration:

“That jacket was ICONIC!”

“Only Travis could rock fringe like that and make it look cool.”

“Country music needs another halftime show — and Travis should headline it!”

With 14 studio albums, chart-topping hits like “It’s a Great Day to Be Alive” and “Best of Intentions,” and a legacy defined by southern grit and authenticity, Tritt remains one of country music’s most recognizable voices.
Though a future Super Bowl performance may not be on the horizon, fans continue showing up to cheer him on during tours, appearances, and special events — including his participation in the 100 Years of Grand Ole Opry celebration last year.
And just like the message in his hit track “T-R-O-U-B-L-E,” Travis Tritt proves he’s still here, still rockin’, and still making music that gets people smiling, singing, and remembering why they fell in love with country music in the first place.
