Blake Shelton Passed on “I Wanna Talk About Me” — Toby Keith Turned It Into a Hit

In the early 2000s, Blake Shelton had the chance to record a song that would later become one of Toby Keith’s most iconic hits: “I Wanna Talk About Me.”

The track, written by legendary Nashville songwriter Bobby Braddock, was originally intended for Shelton. At the time, Shelton was recording his debut album, and Braddock—knowing Shelton liked to freestyle silly raps in the studio—decided to craft a playful, spoken-word style song just for him. Shelton cut the track and believed it might make the record.

But when Giant Records tested the song with focus groups, the feedback was overwhelmingly negative. Executives told Shelton not only would it never work as a single, but it shouldn’t even make the album. “It was that horrifying of a song,” Shelton recalled with a laugh.

The label shelved it. Toby Keith picked it up. And the rest is country music history.

Released in 2001 as the second single off Keith’s Pull My Chain album, “I Wanna Talk About Me” soared straight to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, where it spent five weeks at No. 1. Its mix of humor, energy, and undeniable catchiness struck a chord with fans everywhere.

Looking back, Shelton admits it’s one of those “what if” moments. Would it have been the same massive hit if he had released it? Maybe. Maybe not. What’s clear is that the song found the right voice in Toby Keith. Keith’s delivery—part grit, part swagger—turned it into a stadium anthem that fans still belt out today.

For Shelton, passing on the song wasn’t a failure but a reminder of how unpredictable music can be. Sometimes a track isn’t meant for you, no matter how good it sounds in the studio. And sometimes letting go allows another artist to create something unforgettable.

Two decades later, “I Wanna Talk About Me” remains one of Toby Keith’s signature songs—and a fascinating “what could have been” chapter in Blake Shelton’s career.
