Introduction
“You Got It” is a track featured on American singer Roy Orbison’s 22nd studio album, Mystery Girl (1989). Released posthumously on January 3, 1989, following Orbison’s demise from a heart attack on December 6, 1988, the song included “The Only One” as the B-side and was later reissued with “Crying” (version with k.d. lang).[2][3] This single achieved the ninth spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 and secured the number one position on the Adult Contemporary chart, marking Orbison’s return to the top 10 after 25 years.[4] “You Got It” also reached the third position on the UK Singles Chart and attained top-five status in 10 other countries. Despite being a solo release, the song’s co-writers and instrumentalists included Orbison’s Traveling Wilburys bandmates, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.
As per The Authorized Roy Orbison, the song was recorded in guitarist Mike Campbell’s Los Angeles, California garage and mixed at George Harrison’s residence, Friar Park, in Henley-on-Thames, England.[5] Orbison delivered his sole public rendition of the hit at the Diamond Awards Festival in Antwerp, Belgium, on November 19, 1988, just 17 days before his passing and prior to the single’s release. This performance was integrated into the song’s music video.[6] A 2014 version of the video incorporated footage from rehearsal and practice sessions.
