At 86, Charley Pride stepped onto the CMA Awards stage for what would become his final performance — and sang the song that helped change country music forever. On November 11, 2020, he appeared at the CMA Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement honor. But then he gave the audience something even more memorable: he sang “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” the signature hit that turned a sharecropper’s son from Mississippi into the first Black superstar in the history of country music. He died of COVID-19 at the age of 86. That night on the CMA stage became the last time he ever sang in public.
