On November 11, 2020, he appeared at the CMA Awards to receive a Lifetime Achievement honor. But then he gave the audience something even more memorable: he sang “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” the signature hit that turned a sharecropper’s son from Mississippi into the first Black superstar in the history of country music. He admitted he was nervous. His voice may not have carried the same strength it once did, but its warmth remained unmistakable.
