But then he gave the audience something even more memorable: he sang “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’,” the signature hit that turned a sharecropper’s son from Mississippi into the first Black superstar in the history of country music. He admitted he was nervous. His voice may not have carried the same strength it once did, but its warmth remained unmistakable. In every note, there was the quiet power of a man who had spent five decades breaking barriers with grace, dignity, and extraordinary talent. Just 31 days later, Charley Pride was gone.
